My best apologies for being just a LITTLE behind on the ol' blog. Here is some upcoming news:

I will be teaching a summer enrichment program with the Adirondack Community College, "Construct a Cardboard Chair"

In April I will have an art show at City Hall in downtown Glens Falls. There will be pen and ink drawings and possibly some small sculptures on display.

My jewelry continues to be on display year round with the Lapham Gallery in Glens Falls.

I've just received notice that my jewelry has been selected to be shown on display at the Lapham LARAC gallery starting on November 14th- December 24th. On display will be a series of jewelry from copper, brass, and nickel adorned by semi-precious stones. Items from pins to bracelets and necklaces will be available for purchase.

Head Start

Sorry for the temporary hiatus. Been a bit busy I suppose. I've just begun volunteering at the local Head Start Preschool. I'll be teaching the youngsters a little about art. Most of all, we'll be having fun! I stopped by last Monday to tell them all a little about myself and to do a little show and tell. They loved my pencil drawing of my cat Lola. I'll have to upload it soon.

First lesson: drawing animals!

Updates: The Show, Frustrations, Ideas

The show seems to be coming along okay. Wrapping up the last minute details. Still can't figure out what to do about pricing. I hate pricing, especially larger works. Have to factor in that 30% commission of the gallery. Blah Blah Blah. I am hoping for a good reception and that I am actually able to talk about why I made what I made. I find it hard for me to break it all down, to define it.

On another note. There is a Call for Entries titled "Victim to Victory", in honor of Domestic Violence month. Wouldn't you know I JUST CAN'T figure anything out.... I don't want to make artwork that is literal. Any suggestions would be wonderful!

On the last note. I am thinking about applying for an individual artist's grant. The problem? No idea why I want to apply, after all I kind of have to tell them what I want to use the grant money for. All I know is that I love the outdoors, animals, nature, and wildlife. I love to draw them. The person who gets the money has to have a display or show after they are through creating whatever it is they will create. It also should involve the community somehow, but this can be very broad.

I have always wanted to create a children's book. Obviously I have no idea where to begin, where to get publishing, how much that costs, etc. Initially I had the idea to make a book of the birds of the high peaks in the Adirondacks. Study their habitats and the nature about them and draw them. Problem is that I have a not so hot knee, and fear that I might not be able to climb the peaks. Did I mention there are 46 of them for those not from here? I am actually reading a book about the women who became the first women to climb all 46, or become a "46er". My other idea was to create very large drawings/sketches that depicted the movement of these animals. Again another idea was to develop a children's book (possibly becoming a series) about the animals in the Adirondacks. By studying their behaviors, create characters for the animals, or even one species such as the crow. Perhaps focusing all together on just one species and creating life drawings? Maybe asking the community to come forth with their wild bird or crow stories? Suggestions?

Deadline is in October, I am attending a grant meeting in mid-Sept. and will find out more.

Stressful Week... Finally ending I hope

Artist Statement- You Review

I am writing a new artist statement for the first time in quite awhile. For any artists out there that are stumbling across this post and want to give your feedback or edit/crit my statement feel free. I can always use the help!

Statement:

I am intrigued by the different kinds of habitats that animals and insects create to support life. These tiny creatures invent a world of protection for themselves and their families from a variety of materials found in their natural habitats as well as materials left behind by humans. this idea of creating shelter to protect and shield themselves and their young inspired me to create a series of my own nests. these nests are meant to comfort and provide a sense of safety. Oddly enough they have become tiny spaces where I find myself safe, where I imagine I would feel bliss, if only I were that small. These nests are places where I can lose myself and hide from the terrors of a world so demanding, a place to go to forget about it all.

The accompanied drawings delve into the depths of these nests and reveal small details on a larger than life scale. The continuous lines maintained throughout each drawing emulate the process of creating each nest; yet at the same time represent the cycles of life and day-to-day activity, a constant motion erupting from within. The processes involved in creating these drawings seem to mimic the steps I take with each passing day.

The Fine Art of Jewelry- or Not?

I was recently at a local Fine Art show where I came across quite a bit of, well, it wasn't Fine Art that's for sure. I remember the application clearly stating that there was NO Crafts Allowed. Yet I found myself next to a beader, and just down the way was a man who made side tables from trees, and across the field I could see metal cutouts of animals which were actually coat hooks. So I thought to myself, what do they consider Fine Art?

This show was NOT juried, but the table fee was a sort of hefty $60, and all of the Fine Artists seemed to be selling almost nothing (I included) while the beaders (especially the one next to me) seemed to be doing quite well! Now I am a jewelry artist, and yes I do bead. However, I feel that beading is not really considered Fine Art. However, jewelers who utilized the fine craft of metallurgy and understand how to manipulate metals are certainly Fine Artists. On my final note, there was only one woman who did just that, and I am very glad to see that she received a nice big blue ribbon which she posted proudly. Her work was quite wonderful and I applaud her.
